Make your life easier with these tips...

    * Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little 'stringy things' off of it. That's how the primates do it. (see video). Also, take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

    * Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

    * Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

    * Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

    * To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich, add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.

    * For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.

    * Broken Glass - Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily. Or use bread.

    * Squirrel Away - To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

    * Reducing Static Cling - Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and .... ta da! .. static is gone.

    * Measuring Cups - Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

    * Foggy Windshield- Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

    * Goodbye Fruit Flies- To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever! (I can vouch for this tip)

    * Get Rid of Ants - Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

Overdue book is returned after 45 years

The Reading Room of the British MuseumImage via Wikipedia

The Penguin copy of "Quartermass and the Pit" by Nigel Kneale was finally returned to Dinnington Library 45 years overdue. The principal assistant would like to know the story behind the return. The person need not worry--library records don't go back that far. Read the story here. Compare that to two books that were 50 years overdue and was returned with a cheque for estimated fines! See video below

    Birthmarks: Types, Locations, and Folklores

Capillary haemangioma or strawberry birthmark....Image via Wikipedia
Were you born with a birthmark? Does it have a prominent shape? Is it an embarrassment? Is it attached to an explanation or omen? My mother had a most unique birthmark: two dolphins on her stomach. She always said her mother had a fascination with dolphins.
    *****
Let’s begin with the folklore/superstitions surrounding birthmarks. Here’s a brief sampling:
Your mother had an x-ray while she was pregnant.
A mouse touched your mother when she was pregnant.
A pregnant woman craving a food she didn’t get, so her unborn baby developed a PWS, often in the shape of the food she craved.
Your mother liked jam sandwiches when she was pregnant!
Your mother was wishing for wine when she was pregnant. She wished so hard you were born with port wine spilled on your face.
Your mom spilled wine on herself when she was 6 – 9 months pregnant.
Your mom smoked when she was pregnant and held the smoke in too long.
    Read the rest here.

Get Glympse - make sure your family and friends arrived safely

Image representing Glympse as depicted in Crun...Image via CrunchBase
Glympse is a way to share your real-time location for a specified period of time.

    Who this would benefit:
    • parents who have loaned their car to their children
    • family or friends who want to know they've arrived safely
    • business partners to know where someone is if they're late for a meeting

Glympse ™ is a mobile application that offers an entirely new way to share your location with friends, family and business associates. When you send a Glympse to someone, you send a link (unique URL) that opens to a dynamic map when clicked and lets the recipient see your location for however long you specified using our GlympseWatch™ timer (from a second up to four hours … this map can update in real-time). Once the Glympse timer expires - that's it. Your location will no longer be shared. You can choose to extend a Glympse before it expires and you can always "update" or "delete" a Glympse at any time. The person you send it to does not have to have any special software installed. Surprise your friends and colleagues by being the first one to send them a Glympse. Visit the homepage today.homepage

    Unique mosaic maker

Here are three videos of mosaics created by David Alvarez , a college student and artist from Washington. One is made from 14,000 dice, one is a 25-foot  tall picutre of Jimi Hendrix from cards, and the Joker from 336 Rubik's Cubes.
